This morning I have had the "delightful" task of sorting out my tax return. Every year I share in the frustrations of Paul as I wonder why I don't do the things that I ought to do – such as collating information in an easy and accessible way so that this process is less painful. Basically, I am my own worst enemy!
Often I am also an enemy to myself at the distinct lack of grace that I show myself when I get things wrong. The reality is that, like all of us, I have a flawed charater. No matter how hard I try, there are some things that will always be a negative part of my character this side of eternity. Thankfully God is gracious in the face of our shortcomings.
Perhaps you may also wish to reflect upon the grace you have been shown and who you might need to show grace to, be that yourself or someone else, as we stop together to Pause, Ponder and Pray.
Take a moment now to recognise that you are in the presence of God. It might help to slow your breathing. Take a few deep breaths in and out.
Let’s pray together:
The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.
We say together our family prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Today’s reading is Psalm 69:5
O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
- How do you feel about God knowing the wrong we have done?
- Why might the things we do wrong be considered foolish in God’s eyes?
- How do you think God views you when you get things wrong? How about other people?
- What is Jesus saying to you today?
Father God, I’m sorry for the times when I don’t live in a way that is pleasing to you. Thank you for the gift of forgiveness. Help me to realign my thoughts, actions and words with yours. Amen
Say a prayer today for those who have done wrong to us.
On our church list today we pray for:
Anne and Gordon Flear
Naomi, Matt, Charlotte, William and Emily Harrison
Let’s finish by praying this prayer:
In darkness and in light,
In trouble and in joy,
Help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
