As a curate, I have to attend training on a fairly regular basis. Last night, our year group were talking about discipleship and what it means to follow Jesus. I suspect if I asked everyone reading this we might come up with slightly different answers to each other.
However you understand it, I wonder what being a disciple / a follower of Christ looks like in your life outside of church. Why not take time to think about that as we all stop for a moment to Pause, Ponder and Pray.
Take a moment now to recognise that you are in the presence of God. It might help to slow your breathing. Take a few deep breaths in and out.
Let’s pray together:
The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.
We say together our family prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Today’s reading is Luke 6:20-26
Then he looked up at his disciples and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
“Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.
“But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
“Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
“Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.
“Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.
Why do you think God favours those who suffer hardship?
How do you respond to the challenge that Jesus poses to those who do well by human standards ?
What is Jesus saying to you today?
Father God, thank you that your heart is turned towards the poor. Give me a heart that is after yours. Amen
Say a prayer today for those who work in social care.
On our church list today we pray for:
Yuko, Julius, Elden and Eddie Ang
Let’s finish by praying this prayer:
In darkness and in light,
In trouble and in joy,
Help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
