New green spaces around and ON Brunswick Church
One of the unexpected advantages of Refurb and the regeneration of the area around the church building has been the chance to transform our outside spaces, including the flat roof.
The car park and extension Refurb plans had always included space for planting, and with some assistance from Bluebell Nursery we were able to choose a planting scheme designed to filter pollution, survive dry spells, and provide food for bees and insects as well as humans. We are still awaiting our first apples, plums and cherries but the bees are delighted with the lavender, viburnum and alliums etc that have helped to make the front and side of church so much more appealing. The council have also planted two good sized trees next to the car park to soften the area. A grant from WWF allowed us to buy some living roof squares of native plants which encourage insects in the city.
We still have work to – the pebbledash above the worship room windows needs a freshen up to match the rest of the building (as well as new windows), what is left of the paving needs to be re-laid due to trip hazards, and we’d like some more substantial planters building with bricks left over from the hall extension – but this can all happen in due time.
